Chickasaw Chamber Music Festival Set June 1-3 at McSwain Theatre

The Chickasaw Chamber Music Festival, set June 1-3, will showcase performances and workshops from many renowned musicians from across the country.

Set at the historic McSwain Theatre, Ada, Okla., the festival will include a daily concert from American Indian classical composers and classical music performers and feature workshops taught by the performers.

Performances and workshops by SŌ Percussion, Gabriel Ayala and Dallas-based Voices of Change are planned for the three-day event.

"The festival will showcase a wide variety of American Indian music," said Tate. "With the success last year, we are continuing to grow and expand opportunities for Chickasaws and the whole community to be introduced to classical American Indian composers and performers."

Tate will present morning lectures providing background on performers and composers participating in the festival.

Open to the general public at no charge, these informal lectures will enable participants to become much more familiar with these icons of modern classical music.

With a mission to celebrate Native American composers and performers, the festival will feature a Master class with SŌ Percussion from 1-4 p.m. Friday, June 1.

A pre-concert lecture by award-winning Chickasaw composer Jerod Tate is set for 6 p.m., followed by a 7 p.m. concert by SŌ Percussion.

Called "astonishing and entrancing" by Billboard Magazine and "brilliant" by the New York Times, SŌ Percussion's innovative work with today's most exciting composers and their own original music has quickly helped them forge a unique and diverse career.

SŌ Percussion has performed all over the United States and the world.

Gabriel Ayala is scheduled to lead the Master class from 1-4 p.m., Saturday, June 2. A renowned Yaqui guitarist from Arizona, Mr. Ayala will conduct a concert at 7 p.m. at the McSwain Theatre.

"The Chickasaw Chamber Music Festival is unique because it will highlight major Native American performers and show the various things that we are capable of," Ayala said. "I am honored to be asked to participate again this year."

Receptions are scheduled following each performance at the Chickasaw Nation Arts and Humanities Gallery, located north of the McSwain Theatre.

A pre-concert lecture by Tate will be offered at 2 p.m., Sunday, June 3. The lecture, which is free and open to the public, will be followed by a 3 p.m. concert by Voices of Change.

Voices of Change, is a contemporary music powerhouse ensemble. The Dallas-based ensemble is scheduled to perform compositions by Native American composers Raven Chacon, Trevor Reed and George Quincy.

A reception is scheduled at 4:45 p.m. Sunday at the Chickasaw Nation Arts and Humanities Gallery.
